Game 3: Chicago Blackhawks win 4-3 in overtime vs. Detroit Red Wings

The Hawks pulled off a little stunner on the Detroit Red Wings Friday night at home in front a usual 19,000 at the United Center, this one with some local Champions of our very own visibly on hand hanging out in the owners box for some inspiration.

In this picture you see Mr Michael Jordan decked out in his official, personalized #23 Hawks home sweater having some fun with the old timer Hawk and Golden Jet himself, Bobby Hull, who had been estranged from the organization for decades as part of a grudge between Hull and the now dead owner Dollar Bill Wirtz, a real cheapskate SOB who it’s been said could squeeze a nickel so hard he could actually make the eagle scream, hence the nickname Dollar Bill.

He passed a little while back, and since then many old Hawks have been welcomed back into the fold with open arms as mentors to this young team and the move has obviously paid great dividends thus far in a very short time period.

The game was a barn burner the whole way through, going from a 3-0 Hawks lead flipping back with three unanswered goals the other way tying the game up which ended in a 4-3 victory for the Hawks, coming down to a what turned out to be quick overtime period with the Hawks finishing the back and forth game on top with the winning goal coming barely 2 minutes into the extra period.

This win was their first Detroit scalp for the win wall in this series, bringing them within 1 game of the Red Wings in the best of seven conference finals leading into game 4 to be played this weekend .

There was one incident that marred an otherwise clean yet rough game, always to be expected between these old time NHL charter member rivals, that being a bonecrusher hit placed on the Hawks Martin Havlat by Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall, who received a penalty for interference and a game misconduct, which many Chicago fans felt should have been rewarded with a suspension judging from the reaction by the crowd on hand and the local commentator spin after the game wrapped up on the ice/

In addition the Martin Havlat injury, the Hawks number one goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin left with injuries.

Backup goalie Cristobal Huet, who hadn’t played since April 11, entered in the third period in relief of Khabibulin and made six saves to earn the victory. Bot players remain questionable for the next game, number 4 on Sunday afternoon again at the UC

Here are some links below from the Sun Times and Tribune if you’re looking for a detailed breakdown of the game from beginning to end and congratulations to the Blackhawks for a well earned victory.
